Lymphedema Management Unit

Launch of First-Ever Lymphedema Management Unit in Cachar District, Assam at Dr. Chandra Sekhar Das’s Residence

In Assam, Northeast India, breast cancer patients-both in rural and urban areas-often remain unaware of proper lymphedema management, significantly disrupting their quality of life. Coupled with widespread poverty, many patients struggle to afford even basic treatment. For the first time in Cachar district, a fully free lymphedema treatment unit has been established in Silchar, providing comprehensive care for patients who have suffered for years. The unit features advanced, targeted therapy using the HealPress 12-Chamber Sequential Compression Device, administered 5 days a week for 3+ months and tailored to each patient’s needs.

Key functions of the HealPress device include:

  1. Sequential Directional Massage: The 12 chambers inflate in a wave-like sequence, efficiently directing lymph fluid out of swollen areas.

  2. Overlapping Chambers: Continuous chamber coverage prevents fluid from becoming trapped between segments.

  3. Customized Pressure Control: Adjustable, calibrated pressure ensures personalized treatment for each patient.

  4. Refill Time (Compression/Release): Alternating inflation and full deflation allow the lymphatic system to refill, enhancing overall treatment efficiency.

In addition, the unit provides post–breast cancer surgery lymphedema management exercises for all genders, demonstrated on-site for patients to practice safely at home.

Patients are also provided with free, customized microfiber compression arm sleeves to enhance lymphatic flow, prevent fluid buildup, and support long-term lymphedema management.

This pioneering, patient-centered approach ensures that poor, underserved, and urban patients alike gain access to early detection, effective treatment, and long-term management-bridging healthcare inequities and improving outcomes for all affected by lymphedema in the region.
